When the concept of drones delivering parcels to your door was first reported three years ago, the reaction was of amused disbelief. Now, in 2016, what seemed like science fiction a few years ago, as taken a step closer to becoming a reality.
Internet retailer Amazon has just announced that it has been granted approval from the Government and The Civil Aviation Authority to carry out viability tests. Testing is due to take place fairly soon at a development and research base to the south-east of Cambridge.
The aircraft weigh around 55 lbs, can take off and land vertically, and can deliver a package to an address up to 10 miles away in 30 minutes. But don’t expect to see ‘squadrons’ of ‘parcel drones’ over your house just yet. It could take another five years before they come hovering at your door.
